Position: Ranger, Community, Operations Group, Gisborne
Job Specification

Are you passionate about working with tangata whenua and the wider community? Are you keen to engage others in supporting conservation and kaitiakitanga? Are you comfortable working with statutory processes and systems, and can you support our community to navigate them? Are you able to see the big picture and find innovative, practical solutions?

The Department of Conservation is seeking applicants for the position of Ranger, Community; Kaitiaki, Ao Hapori based in Gisborne. Leading our statutory processes.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a strong, hardworking team and support growing conservation in the East Coast District alongside our Treaty partners and communities.

Core components of this role include:

supporting whanau, hapu and iwi as Treaty partners;

managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders;

coordinating the District's involvement in statutory processes such as RMA Resource Consents, statutory land management, permits and concessions;

coordinating the District's reporting processes to iwi and the conservation board;

supporting local Statutory Boards such as Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve Board.

The ideal applicant will:

be an analytical thinker, able to identify issues, opportunities and innovative solutions;

be well organised, with great time and information management skills;

be adept at learning and using a wide range of systems and processes;

be familiar with legislation relevant to conservation and how it applies to DOC's work e.g. Conservation Act, Marine Mammals Act, Wildlife Act, Reserves Act, Resource Management Act, Treaty settlements, Ngati Porou Takutai Moana Act

be experienced in working with whanau, hapu and iwi, with an understanding of te ao maori. A good understanding of te reo me ona tikanga will be an advantage;

be able to relate to and connect with our diverse community;

demonstrate ability in building positive working relationships across a broad range of public and private sector businesses and groups;

have strong interpersonal and communication skills -skilled in formal written communication and reporting;

have a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in resource management, ecology/environmental management or legal studies will be an advantage;

hold a current full New Zealand Driver License.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa if applying internationally.
